Many of us are spending substantial time at home. As a result, I’ve been thinking a lot about how our homes can make us feel: peaceful, safe, comfortable. At least, that’s how they should make us feel, but maybe you’ve been paying closer attention (with the being home all the time) and realize that you could perhaps stand to make a few pivots in order to feel more cozy and safe in your nest. I’ve also been doing a little Marie Kondo-ing of our household essentials and a bit more ingredient list reading which inspired this post to sharing some easy DIYs for a more natural home.
A MORE NATURAL HOME
In fact over the last few years, I’ve started paying closer attention to what’s inside of all our personal and household products and trying to gradually make more natural swaps. I feel better knowing what the ingredients are inside our products rather than words I can hardly spell, let alone pronounce. Chemicals might have a purpose, but after doing some research I’ve found that there are SO many naturally derived ingredients that are just as powerful as the unpronounceable chemical cocktails, and way less harmful and harsh.
I know that switching to more natural versions of household items can feel overwhelming, and once you start reading labels, it’s tempting to throw everything away and start over. But my biggest piece of advice is to take things one step at a time, and when it’s time to order a new bottle or container, replace it with a more natural option! This is where essential rewards, the monthly wellness box we get each month, has been a game changer for our household.
HERE ARE 5 EASY AT-HOME DIYS TO INCORPORATE MORE NATURAL PRODUCTS
These are a couple of my favorite switches I’ve made. The quality is amazing, and I feel so much better knowing we are choosing natural-based products to use in our home and on our bodies! I’m going to show you 5 easy essential oil DIYs (do it yourself) hacks that even a non-DIY-er can do. There is a whole WORLD of using your essential oils other than just diffusing them.
01 DIY Face Serum
If I’m going to splurge, 9 out of 10 times, it’s on bougie skincare. I really like the finer things. I was BLOWN AWAY when I made this skin serum, and I liked it more than any of the luxurious, expen$ive serums and creams that I was regularly purchasing. This has helped even out my complexion, get hormonal acne under control, and balance out my combo oily & dry skin. I put it on EVERY night. & it’s SO EASY and SIMPLE to make.
- Carrier oil
Jojoba: very close match to our natural, balanced skin PH.
or
Rosehip: known as a “dry” oil. It’s my favorite to put on my face. Great for dryness, redness, helping with sun damaged skin.
& 10 drops each of - Frankincense. My favorite essential oil from the PSK and a queen for skin support. She’s got your back, aging skin, problem skin, dry skin, oily skin, irritated skin, healing skin. I rarely diffuse frankincense, as much as I love the smell, because I save her for my skincare regimen.
- Lavender. Many people’s gateway essential oil, also known as the Swiss army knife of essential oils. It’s good for so many things, and has an insane amount of skin supporting benefits.
- Valor. This is typically known as a blend for emotional support, HOWEVER, pro tip: it has blue tansy in it which is SKIN CARE GOLD.
02 Easy Breezy Sink Scrub
Easy as PIE. All you need is baking soda & your citrus oils. You can play with it to see what ratio and how fragrant you want it to smell, but typically I’ll use 10 drops of citrus fresh and lemon to 1 cup of baking soda.
I’ll sprinkle it anywhere and anytime I want to get a deep clean. On countertops, sinks, bathtubs. Then I’ll spritz some thieves cleaner atop and scrub away.
03 Room Spray
You can ditch aerosol room spray & fabric refreshers with this SUPER easy, natural ingredient list that you can fully pronounce and know what it’s made of. Bonus that it’s very budget friendly.
All you need is a dash of unscented witchazel, essential oil(s) of your choosing, and filtered water.
I LOVE a lavender room spray for the home and car. I also use this as a pillow mist & linen refresh at bedtime with lavender and peace & calming. Sleep in heavenly peace.
You can also make your own toilet spray. We have citrus fresh in ours. “Spray the bowl before you go and no one else will ever know.” 😉
04 Under Eye Brightening Roller
I recommend a really nourishing carrier oil, like argan or jojoba oil. Take this puppy, & add 5 drops citrus fresh, 5 drops lemon. Bada-boom-bada-bing, you’ve got an incredible under eye roller for dark circles and under eye puffies. I love to do this in the A.M. and use a roller or Gua Sha stone.
This also works great as a blemish spot treatment.
05 Make a Roller
There are SO MANY incredible roller combos out there. The truth is that because every body is completely different and we all respond to different things, there’s no one size fits all recipe for putting essential oils on.
Some of my FAVORITE, go-to rollers combos are:
- Muscle Balm | this is a lifesaver if you get tension headaches or stiff muscles.
Peppermint. Panaway. - Allergy Relief | I’ll roll this down my spine, on my chest, under my nose, into my palms and deep breathe.
Lemon. Lavender. Peppermint. Raven. - Emotional Support | Many a day I can be found dousing myself head to toe with emotional support oils.
I love Peace & Calming and Lavender together.
Other emotionally supportive oils from the PSK are: Valor, Frankincense, Lavender, Peace and Calming, Stress Away, Citrus Fresh.
Just top off with your choice of carrier oil (my forever FAV body carrier oil is V-6), & you’re ready to roll, literally. Try some combos and see what works best for you!
